In an age when choosing the wrong emoji can make or break the relationship, you have to get crafty.

10 Gifts Your Girlfriend Actually Wants

By Alexi Knock

It’s getting close to that time of year again when the witches come out to frighten you and ghosts of ex-girlfriends’ past haunt your every waking moment. I’m not referring to Halloween, where all it takes to get lucky in a super hero costume is handing out a little candy.

Nope, I’m talking her 21st Birthday, Christmas, Hanukkah and (dun, dun, dun) Valentine’s Day. Sure these moments are meant to be a time of love and giving, but they could just as easily turn into scary moments if you decide to gift her a Family Guy-themed desk calendar.

Fear not, because we’ve asked college girls to come up with a list of the best things to get your girlfriend for any occasion.

1. Thoughtful photo album

“I like sentimental things, so if he was able to put something together like a photo album or scrapbook that is meaningful to our relationship that would be so cute.”—

Chelsea Tirrell, Senior, Hofstra University

Find the latest photos of you and your girlfriend from Instagram and Facebook and *gasp* print them. Then go to a local crafts store and buy an album or create your own. Though an album predicting what your kids would look like may be taking it a bit far…

2. Anything on Pinterest

Pinterest may be annoying and way too cheetah-printed and pink for you, but it can also be a Godsend when it comes to gifts. Troll your girlfriend’s Pinterest page; she probably already invited you to take a look, but now is when it will really come in handy. She pinned it for a reason. Or make an account and check out the gift ideas for women. You can even indicate a price range you’d like to spend. We swear we won’t tell anyone that you’re secretly FootballGuy67.

3. Concerts together

“My favorite gifts from him are the ones where we can make memories together at a concert or salsa dancing lessons.” —Shayna Sanderson, Senior, American University

Has she been gushing about Sara Bareilles? Get your girlfriend tickets for Sara’s next concert and surprise her with them. Is she always looking up recipes? See if you can sign up for a cooking date in your college town. Hello StubHub.

4. Etsy

Horrible at crafts? Let someone else do it for you! Explore Etsy for one-of-a-kind, handmade gifts like a silver ring with her initial on it. It’s sentimental without putting your crafts skills (or lack thereof) to the test.

5. Mix CD

“Honestly if a guy took the time to bake me cookies or make me a CD of songs he knows I love, I would be really happy with that.” —Rachel Dickerman, Senior, Michigan State University

6. Fashionable gloves

Live somewhere cold? Get her a (designer) pair of knit gloves, a hat and a scarf that she can wear all winter long. Ralph Lauren herringbone gloves go with just about any of your girlfriend’s winter coats.
